CIO South Africa’s Smarter IT summit: Navigating the AI era
The CIO Smarter IT Summit addressed the significant opportunities and challenges presented by AI. The discussions centered on how IT leaders can effectively balance business value, operational efficiency, customer-centricity, and cost, while navigating the complexities of the AI hype cycle.
The event commenced with a significant announcement from York Ning, director of enterprise marketing and solution at Huawei South Africa, who revealed Huawei as CIO South Africa’s latest principal partner, emphasising the company’s mission to bring digital solutions to everyone and the driving force of technology behind sustainable economic growth.
The keynote address was delivered by futurist Bronwyn Williams, who injected humour into her reflections on the evolving interplay between people and technology. Following the keynote, a lively panel discussion featuring Standard Bank Group CIO Jörg Fischer, Telesure CIO Justin Freeman, and Transnet group CIO Pandelani Munyai, delved into the practicalities of AI implementation.
After a series of breakaway discussions, the consensus of the event is that AI’s true value lies in empowering both customers and employees, while driving business value.

CFO South Africa’s Power of Purpose summit: Integrating purpose and profit
The CFO Power of Purpose Summit focused on the critical theme of integrating purpose into financial decision-making. Top finance professionals gathered to discuss aligning their financial teams with the broader organisational purpose while navigating the balance between financial performance and making a meaningful impact on society.
After breakaway sessions and a keynote address, a high-level panel discussion, featuring Zutari CFO Joe Ndala, DRDGold CFO Riaan Davel, Mercedes-Benz South Africa CFO Taryn Woodbridge, and executive director for finance at Barloworld Stephen Mahlare, took place, in which the finance leaders shared their organisations’ approaches to purpose.
Riaan explained DRDGold’s purpose of “rolling back the environmental legacy of mining”. Taryn shared Mercedes-Benz South Africa’s mission of “moving the world”. And Stephen emphasised Barloworld Equipment’s values and purpose-driven approach. Joe concluded by differentiating between vision and purpose, stating that purpose grounds an organization’s values and guides its actions.

CHRO South Africa’s Apex Talent summit: Reimagining talent management
The CHRO Apex Talent Summit explored the evolving landscape of talent management. The central theme emphasised that people are the cornerstone of organisational success, with discussions focusing on how learning and growth opportunities can cultivate an irresistible workplace.
A standout session was the EVP roundtable, where leaders including CHRO at Tiger Brands S'ne Magagula shared insights, revealing a focus on providing learning opportunities and differentiated rewards to attract and retain talent, alongside the critical importance of listening to diverse employee needs.
Global chief human resources officer at iSON Experience Dr Zain Reddiar summarised a discussion emphasising that organisational training should extend beyond internal needs to contribute to society. And Managing Director at REMChannel Lindiwe Sebesho introduced the concept of job crafting, where learning aligns passions with roles, and highlighted the focus on employee progression based on outputs.
