Shaun says that he’s driven, adaptable and dependable, and believes there’s nothing better than seeing his work connecting partners with the CHRO South Africa community come to life.
Shaun Bateman, sales manager at CHRO South Africa, a part of Executive Communities, works to connect partners with the powerful HR community. Shaun’s approach to sales is to start by understanding motivation and then going on to deliver meaningful results.
He explains that his professional history is “a mix of business, people, and performance”. This breadth of interests is reflected in his qualifications: “I’ve done a diploma in business management, with certifications in mental health, positive psychology, business communication, and sales strategy, plus a certificate in basic science & personal training through Reebok.”
Finding his stride
Shaun’s career path led him through various sectors before finding his current fit. “I started out in publishing and media, learning how to build audiences and tell stories that connect. That grew into business development and sales, where I found my stride.”
While his current role was not necessarily planned, he says “it fits”, emphasising that: “Every step taught me how to read people, build trust, and get results without the noise.”
He believes that the sales manager role is a match for his motivators. “This role plays straight to my strengths,” Shaun says. “I’m driven, adaptable, and competitive, and I perform best when there’s a goal on the board and people to connect with. I like pace. I like pressure.”
He acknowledges this competitive drive as central to his success. “My Enneagram calls me the ‘competitive achiever’, and that’s about right. I enjoy taking something from nothing and turning it into something that counts.”
Connecting leaders and creating impact
When asked what he likes best about his work, Shaun is very clear: “The people. Hands down”. He appreciates the unique access his position grants him within the business world. “I get to sit with some of the sharpest leaders in the country, hear what drives them, and connect them with ideas and opportunities that make a real difference,” he says.
For Shaun, the reward lies in the tangible outcomes of these connections. “And there’s nothing better than seeing your work come to life. A partnership, an event, a conversation that moves the needle.”
This is all in a day’s work at Executive Communities, which Shaun says is dedicated to fostering genuine connections. “We connect and celebrate the country’s top HR leaders through world-class events, content, and partnerships,” he explains.
He particularly values the organisation’s mission: “What I love about it is the purpose. It’s not corporate noise, it’s real connection. We bring people together, share ideas that shape industries, and build communities that actually matter.”
He says that this space suits his high-performance ethic. “It’s fast-paced, no-nonsense, and built on trust and performance. My kind of environment.”
Lasting impact
Looking to his future, Shaun has clear and ambitious goals centered on leadership and legacy. “I’m working towards leading something bigger. Building or running a business that blends people, performance, and purpose,” he says. “I want to keep learning, keep growing, and eventually build something of my own that has real impact. For me, success isn’t just about money or titles. It’s about creating something that lasts and doing it with integrity. When I look back one day, I want to say I built something worth remembering.”
Outside of his professional duties, Shaun maintains a simple routine focused on health, learning, and family. Asked what he does for fun, he replies: “Pick up heavy stuff and put it down again. Keeps the mind sharp and the body honest.”
He values quality time and continuous self-improvement. “I read, learn, and spend time with my wife and kids. I like to keep it simple, good food, good company, and time that feels earned,” he shares.
Ultimately, he says, his free time must be meaningful. “If it challenges me, I’m in. If it makes my family smile, even better”.
